Cost of Living Support

We know the rising cost of food, energy bills and childcare can be worrying. If you are pregnant or have a child under 4 years, there are different schemes that may be able to help.

Drop-Ins with our Community Connectors

It can feel hard to talk about money worries. You are not alone. Whatever your circumstances, our Connectors are available at local community spaces for a friendly, confidential chat. They can help to try and lighten the load by offering tips and ideas on reducing your costs.

They can show you schemes that may be able to help your family – such as Healthy Start, Warm Hubs, local offers, information on grants and funds, and help with form filling.

Don’t worry if you aren’t able to attend a drop-in advertised. Please get in touch and we can make arrangements that suit you and your family. Email: betterstart.cecd@nspcc.org.uk

Money

There’s no limit to how many children you can claim.

People often confuse this benefit with Child Tax Credits, where you can only claim for 2 children. Child Benefit is different, it is universal.

No, you don’t automatically receive this benefit – so make sure you apply! It can only be backdated for 3 months, so it’s best to start the application process as soon as possible after you’ve registered the birth of your child, or they come to live with you.

If you’re eligible, from April 2023 you’ll get £24.00 a week for your first child and £15.90 a week for any children after that. There’s no limit to how many children you can claim.

It’s usually paid every 4 weeks but you can ask for it to be transferred weekly.

To apply, you can either fill out a printed form or complete online Child Benefit claim form CH2.

If you need any support with your application, call us on 01253 476 789 or email betterstart.cecd@nspcc.org.uk. Or if you spot one of our Community Connectors at an event or community space, you can ask them for help.

This online checker is an easy way to find out if you are receiving the benefits and financial support available to help you with living costs. If you need any help filling out the checker, our Community Connectors can always support you:

Childcare

Did you know?

An easy way to tell if you are eligible for the 15hours free childcare at 2 years old is if you already receive the Healthy Start scheme.

Energy

Libraries, faith buildings, sports clubs and other community spaces across Blackpool are opening their doors to provide families with a free, safe place to keep warm and reduce isolation.

Warm Hubs are offering a range of social activities and services such as hot drinks, meals, information on the cost of living, free wi-fi and mobile device charging.

There are plenty more warm hubs around Blackpool, for a full list of places you can access click through: Directory – FYi Directory

It’s a really good idea to sign up to this free service. Energy companies have registers of vulnerable customers who would be most at risk if their power was cut off. This includes older people, people with illnesses or disabilities, pregnant women and families with young children.

Being on the Priority Services Register protects you from disconnection if you struggle to pay your energy bills or top up. If your pre-payment meter runs out over the weekend, you will not be cut off, giving you chance to top up when you are next able to.

It also helps to make sure priority support is available in emergencies, such as providing heating and cooking facilities in the event of power cuts.

Contact your energy company and ask if you can be added to their Priority Services Register.  If you have a different supplier for your gas and electricity, you’ll need to get in touch with them both. You can also contact United Utilities to be added to the list for your water supply.

There is a new website to help you easily sign up to the Priority Services Register. All you need is your postcode and they will show you how to sign up on your suppliers websites.  Take a look here: https://www.thepsr.co.uk/

Did you know?

If you live in Blackpool, you may be eligible to apply to the council for the Household Support Fund which can help by paying an award directly to your energy provider.

You don’t need to be in arrears to apply for this fund, just have less than £3,000 in savings:

  • £200 for qualifying households of one or two people (including children)
  • £300 to qualifying households of three or more people (including children).

If successful, awards will appear as a credit on your bill or pre-payment electric or gas meter.

To find out more and apply: Household support fund (blackpool.gov.uk)

If you are struggling or begin falling behind with your energy bills, the best thing to do is contact your supplier as soon as possible. If they know you have a problem, they will work with you to find a solution. They may be able to review your bill and payment plan or provide information on hardship funds available.

If you’re on a pre-payment meter and you can’t afford to top up, contact your gas or electricity supplier immediately. You can ask for ‘emergency credit’. Your supplier’s contact details are on the back of your bill or on their website.

If you are pregnant or have children under the age of 5, ask your supplier to add you to their Priority Services Register. This means you’ll be able to get extra support.

Remember if you are worried about your energy bills and heating your home, you can always access Warm Hubs across Blackpool for free. For a full list of spaces click through: Directory – FYi Directory
